Handle with care – guidelines for effective web content management.
Robust web content management tools are a great way for you to take control of your company’s website, but there are limits and guidelines that should be followed to maintain the integrity of the design.
The ability to update your website is a feature that most of our clients want, and our content management system can allow you to update images, add pages, delete pages, and change web copy in a moments notice. While experience in html, xhtml, css, javascript, and other programming languages isn’t necessary, it is important that the updates are handled by one or two people who have been properly trained. The primary concern would be accidental page deletion, though regular website backups will allow you to retrieve the deleted page if that should ever happen. Some questions that will need to be answered include: What happens to the navigation when a page is added? What if I add a picture that’s the wrong size? Can I change the font from black to lemon yellow?
We will work with you up-front to determine your training needs and can put together a training package with guidelines that will help you to maintain your website without straying from the final design. Text style sheets created by our designers and developers will provide you with a preset range of font families, colors and sizes to choose from that are consistent from page to page. Is lemon yellow a good idea for a font color? Probably not, so sticking to the predetermined choices is key to maintaining readability and consistency throughout your site.
We can also provide your team with layered Photoshop files, so that you can replicate photo design effects with new images, but this requires compatible software. If new images are added without any style effects, they will look out of place, and it is important to either budget for the software or to have the photos styled by our agency, as needed.
In summary, content management can be very basic to somewhat involved – gaining maximum control of your website requires training for at least one or two key people, robust image editing software and strict adherence to our guidelines to make your updates appear like they are part of one harmonious plan.
